Bank of Japan to launch CBDC pilot before May 2023 — The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is planning to launch the pilot program for its central bank digital currency (CBDC) in April 2023. This is part of the BOJ’s efforts to keep up with other major central banks in exploring the potential benefits and risks of CBDCs. The BOJ is also conducted several proof-of-concept tests for its CBDC, which began in 2021.
Circle dismisses rumors of SEC enforcement action — Circle, a US-based digital currency financial services firm, has denied rumors of an imminent enforcement action by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The rumors, circulating on social media, led to the price of the USDC stablecoin dropping below its peg to the US dollar. Circle has assured its customers that its stablecoin remains fully backed and is committed to complying with regulatory requirements.
SEC to target crypto firms operating as qualified custodians — The SEC is reportedly planning to propose rule changes that could restrict the services crypto firms can provide their clients. These changes could impact the ability of crypto firms to hold digital assets as qualified custodians. The proposal will be reviewed by a five-member SEC panel, with a majority vote required for the proposal to proceed to the next stage.
