Coinbase fined $3.6M in the Netherlands — According to a Reuters article from January 26, the Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), penalised cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase 3.3 million euros ($3.6 million) for failing to follow local rules for financial service providers. Prior to starting operations in the Netherlands, the exchange apparently failed to acquire the required registration to provide services there. Coinbase’s size as a business and the fact that it has a “significant number of customers in the Netherlands,” according to the DNB, were taken into account.
South Africa updates its advertising code to include new cryptocurrency rules — The Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) of South Africa has added a new provision for the cryptocurrency sector to shield consumers from unethical advertising. A new provision added to Section III of the South African advertising code mandates that businesses and individuals adhere by particular advertising requirements relating to the provision of bitcoin products and services.
Genesis is suing Roger Ver for $20 million for unsettled cryptocurrency option trades — A division of the cryptocurrency lending company Genesis has filed a lawsuit against proponent of Bitcoin Cash Roger Ver for unresolved crypto options worth $20.8 million. On January 23, GGC International, a component of the insolvent cryptocurrency lender, filed a lawsuit against Ver in the New York State Supreme Court, alleging that the proponent of BCH had neglected to settle expired crypto options contracts. Ver has 20 days in all to respond to the summons. The BCH advocate will be required to pay the whole cost if he doesn’t respond within that time frame. The BCH supporter has not yet reacted to the case as of this writing.
